How entertaining that each of Ferrer’s two greatest performances on-screen is of a French aristocrat with a famous physical deformity who encounters only failure and despair in his esteem life. In any event, Ferrer is lustrous in a cast of consistently high quality. As chanteuse Jane Avril, Zsa Zsa Gabor essentially plays herself: comely, vain, melodramatic, self-absorbed, good-hearted, and charming. Also mighty are Colette Marshand (as Marie Charlet), Suzanne Flon (Myrianne Haven), Katherine Kath (La Goulue), and Christopher Lee (Georges Seurat) . Although nominated for several Academy Awards, this film received only two (for Color Art Direction and Color Costume Originate), both richly deserved. Huston skillfully directs an genuine cast while blending seamlessly Oswald Morris’ cinematography with George Auric’s musical glean.

This is one of the most enthralling biographies I’ve ever seen on film.
Until I acquired the DVD, I never fully realized how shapely this film looked, either. I was frightened to seek how spectacular the colors were and how worthy it helped grasp the flavor of the dance hall and the cobblestone streets of France 100 years ago…..and, of course, Tolouse-Lautrec’s substantial artwork. This movie is a feast for the eyes.
The DVD also offers an opportunity to do something I suggest other fans of this movie try: exercise the English subtitles. This plan, you don’t have to strain to understand the French accents, notably Colette Marchand’s, and it makes this spellbinding myth even better.
Story-wise, it’s a bit of a soap opera but one I tranquil found intriguing, thanks mainly to Lautrec’s dialog. He had some really attractive things to say, mostly in a cynical diagram. That cynicism, unfortunately, caught up with him in the destroy. Jose Ferrer captured this tortured soul about as well as any actor could request to do. I’m sorry he didn’t secure an Academy Award for this performance.
Viewers who only saw the more unusual “Moulin Rouge!” missed the sincere myth. That movie was a farce; this is the sincere thing.

Filler isn’t the only pickle, however. Another major let down with these episodes is animation quality. Shippuuden was released directly after this series ends without missing a beat. Sadly this must have required the top artists working on the project because they definitely didn’t do any of these episodes. The consistently radiant animation was one of the major factors that first drew me to Naruto. It’s not found here and actually seems to net progressively worse.
I’d give every box station up to this point a 5 star rating. They are packaged well and attractive fairly priced compared to a lot of other anime series’ I’ve bought in the past ($29.99 a dvd for DragonBall Z with unprejudiced 3 episodes comes to mind.) A lot of work has to go into the dubbing of a Japanese series to English, and you can play these dvds with dispute translation subtitles and it’s nearly word for word. This is one of my approved parts of the box sets because I have watched some translated anime (again DBZ comes to mind) that left me wondering what the hell they were doing when they started making up their have dialogue. In addition each box station has had a major development or introduction of characters and area twists that leaves you anxiously waiting for the next place. These episodes actually do quite the opposite too often making you cringe at how abominable they win.

I had never seen Olivia Newton-John before, and I was mesmerized by the most fabulous woman I had ever seen, dancing and singing through this magical fairy narrative. My life had been hum drum up to that point, and the magic, glitz, animation, and music from this film made me want to gain up. I was so anxious to meander and rollerskate (LOL) that I was up in no time walking around. I will forever fancy this movie and how a “muse” called Olivia inspired me to live again.
I Care For this movie. Why talk about how unpleasant it is? Because it is VERY dreadful. It’s so unpleasant it’s reliable! Whose plan was it to merge fading musical star Gene Kelly with 80’s pop sensation Olivia Newton John??? Throw in some ELO music and some neon special effects and you’ve got XANADU. Oh, it’s fantastic!! Roller skating, off-the-shoulder 80’s dresses, long hair, leg warmers…. This is XANADU. The storyline is negligable. You honest wait till they accumulate to the next song! The choreography is that Kenny Ortega 80’s stuff. Watch for Matt Latanzi (Olivia’s ex) as a dancer in the background. By the time this movie gets to it’s roller-skating in the round finale, you will be rocking! (The dancers/rollers chant: “Xanadu! Xanadu!” and accomplish some sort of choreographed hand-jive movements! I want to learn those moves!) Bask In it, y’all. Like the song says: “Now that you’re here, now that you’re advance … Xanadu!”

Writer Thomas Schnauz also turned in two scripts: “Lord of the Flies” (the season’s only overtly comedic catch) is a clever but at times strained affair. The main attraction is really for diehard X-philes, since the episode is chubby of waggish allusions to writer Darin Morgan’s classic 3rd season script “War of the Copraphages”. More effective is Schnauz’ “Scary Monsters”; while its surface narrative is purposely borrowed from THE TWILIGHT ZONE, the whimsical “Mulder vs Doggett” subplot is a fun spoof. Agent Scully’s impromptu “kitchen autopsy” is also a large bit, harkening abet to the classic comedy of the series’ golden years.
Three more scripts, in what could be termed the “Exorcist File” vein, were seen in Season 9:
“Daemonicus” (written & directed by Frank Spotnitz) features some eerily creative camera work and a “Hannibal Lechter” type villain while adding further details to the character of Agent Doggett. The graphically violent “Hellbound” outlines writer David Amann’s deliberately unfamiliar theological juxtaposition: Calvinist predestination and Buddhist reincarnation. John Shiban’s “Underneath” is a disaster; easily the worst episode of the season.
Chris Carter wrote and directed the capable “Incredible”, the latest in a long line of quirkily humerous yet serious scripts (a la Darin Morgan) that deal with perennial philosophical issues (free will/determinism good/evil, et al ) . The episode features an pleasant performance by Burt Reynolds; the brilliantly shot street scenes (and music) are a Carterian homage to Italian “cinema dell’arte”.
Longtime staff writer Vince Gilligan’s two contributions are mixed affairs: the sepia-tone cinematography of “John Doe”, coupled with Robert Patrick’s delicate acting fabricate this episode delightful up until the oddly strained “break and bang” finale. “Sunshine Days” is one of Gilligan’s rare missteps; a re-tread of his “Je Souhaite” (Season 7) with an gloomy undercurrent of saccharine sentimentality.
The ongoing subplot (treated in various episodes of Seasons 8-9) relating to Agent Doggett’s personal tragedy was resolved in “Release” ( particularly gorgeous music by Effect Snow ) . It is a testament to the quality of THE X FILES that in their last season the staff writers (John Shiban & David Amann) would prepare so properly respectful a vehicle for Robert Patrick, whose performances were so vitally primary for the series in its final years.
“Jump the Shark” was neither the best nor worst treatment that could have been prepared as the swan song of the beloved Lone Gunmen. However flawed the script, the courageous efforts of the three misfits in this episode were a important correction to the idiotic mischaracterization that shot through the (mercifully short-lived) series (Spring 2001) that bore their name. In “Jump the Shark” some of the eccentric nobility of the Lone Gunmen was restored.
MYTHOLOGY EPISODES:
The symbiotic partnership between Chris Carter & Frank Spotnitz continued with their co-writing of 6 of the 7 story arc episodes airing in Season 9 (the finale was penned by Carter alone) .
The ambitious 2-part opener (“Nothing Famous Happened Today I/II”) fuses the familiar “alien hybrid” idea with the newer (logically consistent) element of “supersoldiers”.
The Orwellian/Kafkaesque atmosphere of “Trust No1″ is a compellingly well-framed continuation of the tale arc as well as a sunless commentary on positive governmental strictures enacted in the wake of 9/11.
An unbelievable degree of openly religious (Christian) symbolism (in terms of dwelling, dialogue and cinematography) pervades the mid season 2-parter titled “Provenance/Providence”.
“William” is taut episode creatively directed (and co-written) by David Duchovny; the clever double twist ending has dramatic ramifications that extend backward and forward in time. Gillian Anderson puts forth a customarily engaging performance emphasizing Scully’s novel qualities of nobility and loving self-sacrifice.
The substantial 2 hour finale (“The Truth”) exudes a special glow, starting out (“in media res”) with the return of Mulder, lagging a bit during the lengthy court-room trial scenes and ending with a fireworks flourish in which director Kim Manners pulls out all the stops. The final scene of THE X FILES is a level-headed coda; a truly fair moment between Mulder and Scully as they portion their mutual idea that, in spite of all appearances, hope is not lost and that “the light shines in the darkness” .
The 9th season of “The X-Files” was announced as the last and, as such, Chris Carter, Frank Spotnitz, Vince Gilligan and Kim Manners tried to imbue the last season with the top notch writing quality that had been a hallmark of the first 6 seasons. Unfortunately, the series didn’t quite live up to its potential during the 9th season. With the fate of Mulder, Scully and their baby composed hanging along with too many loose ends from the mythology arc (and a fresh mythology arc that was begun during season the explain had to juggle too many balls with too few hands. Collected, the last season had some diamonds in the rough and a strong cast to polish them. Carter and his crew would have done better to play wrap up the season over five or six episodes and dropping some of the weaker episodes in the season. “Jump the Shark” where the Lone Gunmen meet their fate is either dauntless or incredibly lifeless depending upon which fan you talk to. It also ticked off a lot of fans that these quirky and delectable characters finally meet (SPOILER)
their extinguish.
The thinpak boxed status has all 19 episodes. Despite comments to the contrary some extras ARE included for this position including the commentary track for “Fantastic” by Carter, writers Gilligan, John Shiban and Spotnitz on “Jump the Shark” and director Kim Manners on “The Truth”. Deleted scenes are also included for episodes and can be reintegrated through the main menu (a dinky X will appear in the corner noting which are deleted scenes) . The shows are presented in anamorphic widescreen with exceptional transfers. During some of the darker scenes in a couple of episodes the transfer turns gloomy for a brief period of time but that’s few and far between. The Dolby Digital Surround tracks are nicely stale to design atmosphere and add to the tension for the best episodes.
What’s missing? The documentary on the making of “The Truth”, the deleted scenes that were grouped together on the last discs, the profiles, featurettes and the DVD-ROM game “The Truth”. While it would have been nice to have these on this area they are hardly significant for fans that want the shows themselves.
Personally I felt that the reveal could have continued if they had eased out Mulder and Scully in season 8 as the characters of Doggett (Robert Patrick) with his hardnosed advance and Reyes (Annabeth Gish) with her unusual age, quirky personality would have made for an titillating series by itself. Perhaps they should have kept the characters for a spin-off outside of “The X-Files” either arrangement the two actors had nice chemistry together and Patrick had a dynamic shroud presence that would have insured an intersting point to. Deputy Director Kersh (James Pickens Jr) and Cary Elwes’ Brad Folmer made gret foils/allies during this season. Elwes’ Forlmer was a complex villian and he does a terrific job of keeping the character intersting throughout the season. Either draw it was time for Carter to wrap up the tattered ends of the mythology and the relationship for Scully, Mulder and William their baby William.
